Why Used Furniture Can Carry Bed Bugs

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are blood-feeding insects and brilliant hitchhikers. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that they travel from infested sites to new homes on furniture, bedding, luggage, boxes and clothing, and it advises checking second-hand furniture, beds and couches before bringing them home. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health also lists buying used furniture that already has bed bugs in it as a common way they get into homes.

The hiding places are the real problem. Bed bugs squeeze into cracks and crevices where they often go unnoticed, so furniture gives them plenty of cover:

  • Seams and folds: under cushions, along piping and inside zippers
  • Wooden joints: drawer corners, screw holes and cracks in the frame
  • Undersides: dust covers and the fabric stapled under sofas and chairs
  • Headboards: gaps behind the board and where it meets the wall bracket

Online listings and roadside pickups add to the risk, because you can’t know how or where the item was stored. Furniture left out by the road can look fine and still be infested, according to the University of Georgia, so it’s especially risky.

What’s Actually at Stake?

Your sleep and health. Bed bug bites cause itching, red marks and restless nights. Bed bugs are not known to transmit infectious diseases, but heavy scratching can lead to secondary skin infections.

How fast it spreads. A female can lay 200 to 500 eggs, so a single infested piece can start a full infestation. Bed bugs move from the couch to the bedroom, curtains and wardrobes within weeks. In apartment towers and shared housing they can also reach neighbouring units, which is why a single treated flat can still be reinfested.

Your wallet. Replacing infested furniture, washing everything and paying for treatment usually costs far more than you saved on a cheap second-hand item.

Your peace of mind. For many people the stress and poor sleep are the hardest part of an infestation, which is exactly why preventing it in the first place is worth the effort.

Landlords and employers. If you furnish rentals, villas or shared rooms with used items, one infested piece can turn into complaints across several rooms. Our guide to bed bug control for hotels and staff accommodation in Abu Dhabi is worth a read.

How to Inspect Used Furniture Before You Buy

Bring a flashlight and a thin card, like a credit card, to run along the seams. The University of Georgia’s guide on shopping second-hand and staying bed bug free recommends removing cushions and checking edges and seams, and taking out drawers to check cracks, joints and screw holes.

Here’s the routine:

  1. Check the whole piece in good light. Never inspect furniture in a dark garage or at night.
  2. Take off cushions and covers. Look along zippers, seams and tufted buttons.
  3. Pull out the drawers. Inspect the joints, corners and the inside of the frame.
  4. Flip it over. Examine the underside, the legs and the dust cover fabric.
  5. Look at headboards and bed frames. Check every crack and screw hole.
  6. Give it a sniff. A strong, bad smell can signal a large infestation.

What Bed Bugs Look Like (Signs to Watch For)

Live bed bugs are small, flat, oval and reddish-brown, about 4 to 8 mm long, roughly the size of an apple seed. Wikipedia’s bed bug article has photos of the different life stages.

Dark spots are bed bug droppings, and the EPA lists droppings and blood stains from crushed bugs among the signs on bed linens. They look like tiny ink dots and may bleed into fabric like a marker.

Shed skins and eggs. Look for pale, empty skins and tiny white eggs about 1 mm long and sticky, laid in cracks and crevices.

Rusty stains. Reddish smears on fabric or wood can mean crushed bugs.

If you spot even one of these, walk away from the purchase. No bargain is worth it.

Already Bought It? Here’s What to Do

Check it again outside your home before you carry it in. Bed bugs can fall off during transport.

Use heat where you can. The EPA notes that a dryer on high heat can kill bed bugs, which works well for cushion covers, curtains and other fabric items.

Add an encasement to mattresses and box springs. The EPA notes that the light color of an encasement makes bed bugs easier to see.

Skip the DIY spray. It’s tempting, but over-the-counter sprays and foggers often miss the cracks where bed bugs hide: the EPA says a fogger’s spray will not reach cracks and crevices. A licensed technician can inspect and treat the problem at its source.

Quick Questions People Ask

Can bed bugs live in second-hand sofas and mattresses? Yes. They hide in seams, frames and under dust covers, and mattresses and upholstered furniture carry the highest risk.

Can I treat used furniture myself? Heat on washable fabrics helps, but wooden frames and upholstery usually need professional treatment.

How fast do bed bugs spread from one piece of furniture? Quickly. A female can lay hundreds of eggs, so one infested piece can seed an infestation that spreads to other rooms.

Is it safe to buy furniture from roadside or online listings? It’s risky. If you can’t inspect the item thoroughly before taking it home, skip it.
